Tonight Start The Holiday Weekend With an Evening at First Fridays
2011-07-01 · By Editor
We’re kicking off the holiday weekend on Friday, July 1 with a summertime portion of art, music, and Uncle Sam. Plenty of food options, great tunes, and artwork to begin your weekend of Independence Day celebrations. Each month there is a guaranteed generous portion of “the unexpected” to keep things interesting.
Ingredients for the night include: Mobile art stations, California culture, dancing Mickey & Minnie, flag retirement, reenactors, bikes, patriotic paintings for kids, electronic sounds & music, Uncle Sam, DJs, jazz, rockabilly favorites, dance, Timstrument, face mapping, community drawing, tarot cards, face painting, First Books, antiques, piano man, Big Red Bus, and the Knolls Ranger.
Councilmember James Johnson’s “First Books at First Fridays” at the Dana Branch Library begins at 5:30pm featuring “Stars, Stripes, and Sounds” with special guest reader, city clerk Larry Herrera.
Also new for July: Has your flag lost its glory? Is it tattered and tired? Local mortgage broker Dennis C. Smith wants to help you retire your old flag properly and wave a new star spangled banner. Smith will be happy to accept your old flag in the Expo Arts Center at 4321 Atlantic Ave. Just bring in the flag that needs replacing and Smith, along with the Boy Scouts of America, will make sure that your American flag has a proper retirement. If you bring in a flag to be retired, you will receive a coupon, courtesy of Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH) Bixby Knolls, for 10% off any flag in their store.
Stop by Bella Cosa (3803Atlantic) from 6:30pm – 8:00pm to find all the information about First Fridays, maps, business info, and restaurant recommendations.
When the businesses start to close, “First Fridays After Hours” begins across the district. Nino’s Italian Restaurant will host a DJ, music by The Flying Mammals and late night dining. 562CityLife presents “Overtime at The Factory,” with music, food, and cigar lounge. EJ Malloy’s and the LB Petroleum Club also go late into the night with food, drinks, and great music. Why go home early? Stay out (late into the night) and continue the energy.
Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the Big Red Bus that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.
