Free Thanksgiving meals bring community together

Free Thanksgiving mealsPerhaps more than any other holiday, is a time for gathering with family and friends. A time when we are more mindful of our personal bounty and willing to share with a neighbor. Starting Sunday and lasting through , community organizations will be serving free Thanksgiving meals in Long Beach.

“Drive-Thru” Thanksgiving meal on Sunday

This will be the 6th year Mayra‚Äôs Drive-Thru, 1990 Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, will host an open-invitation celebration. The party, which takes place in the market’s parking lot, served 550 Thanksgiving meals last year and expect even more this year. All the food is cooked fresh by Ramon and Martha Serrano, with help from their family and a few neighbors.

Free 3-day Thanksgiving Banquet

Bread of Life Church will offer free Thanksgiving banquets from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The events include free food, live music, men’s and women’s clothes in all sizes, a free mobile medical clinic, the UCLA bloodmobile and some celebrity guests. Bread of Life Church is located at 655 Cedar Avenue, Long Beach. Call 213-446-4440.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Community Presbyterian Church in North Long Beach will host its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner and Service on Tuesday, November 24. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m., with a chapel service at 7 p.m. The church is located at 6380 Orange Avenue, corner of 64th Street. The meal is free, and all are invited. Thanksgiving Meals

LBRM will serve a Thanksgiving Eve Dinner, Wednesday night from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a Thanksgiving Day on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Long Beach Rescue Mission is located at 1335 Pacific Avenue at 14th Street. Call 562 591-1292. Meals are served at no cost to diners. Donations are accepted at www.lbrm.org. Help buy Thanksgiving meals for just $1.88 per person.

Enjoy Your Turkey in a Tent

Calvary Chapel North Long Beach, 5722 Lime Avenue, will serve a hot turkey dinner to the local community from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day in a big tent in the church parking lot. Free tickets will given out at the church and through the church’s food ministry. Call 562-423-0447.

Volunteer at the VA

The Vietnamese American Armed Forces Association (VAAFA) needs volunteers on Thanksgiving Day to visit and serve lunch at the Long Beach VA Medical Center. This will be an opportunity for community members to show their appreciation to Veterans at the Hospital. VAAFA will bring two turkeys, pies, cookies, and dinner rolls. Volunteers are welcome to cook an item to bring along. There are approximately 50 patients.
