Freeway shooting: LBPD searching for bank robbery suspects

bank robber pursuit ends on 405Traffic is moving again on the 405 Freeway as of 2 p.m. However, the suspects from an Orange County bank robbery are still at large. Some Long Beach schools are still locked down as officers search for three suspects who fled after the chase.

Earlier this morning, a Citizens Business Bank in Laguna Hills bank was held up a and a half-hour later, a California Highway Patrol officer spotted what appeared to be the suspects’ white SUV. The pursuit began in Westminster at about 10:30 a.m., with the CHP following the vehicle northbound on the San Diego Freeway.

One suspect exited the vehicle at the 605 Freeway and Carson Avenue. The vehicle continued on and exited the 405 Freeway at Woodruff Avenue and exchanged gunfire with the officers. Following the shooting, two suspects fled on foot  while a female suspect took off again in the SUV.

Although now partially re-opened, the 405 Freeway was closed in both directions between Palo Verde Avenue and Bellflower Boulevard so police could investigate and search for the suspects. The two right northbound lanes at the Woodruff Avenue off-ramp remain closed.

Half a dozen schools were placed on lock down during the search, including Millikan High school, Cubberly Elementary school, Prisk Elementary, Stanford Jr. High, St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Los Altos Methodist Church Preschool. Nearby residents were informed of the incident using the reverse 9-1-1-system and asked to stay in their homes with the doors locked and windows shut.

One suspect was taken into custody just after 2 p.m. near the Woodruff Avenue offramp on the 405 Freeway. The Long Beach Police Department’s SWAT team and the Los Angles County Sheriff are assisting the CHP with the search for the other suspects:

  • The first suspect is described as a male black, about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with short hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue pants and white underwear with print.
  • The second suspect is described as a male black, wearing a white T-shirt.
  • The third suspect is described as a female black, heavy-set, with braided hair. She was the driver of the Tahoe.
