The public is invited to come out and celebrate Long Beach’s newest farmers’ market at the Healthy Active Long Beach ‘Fun with Food and Play!’ health and nutrition event on Saturday, September 29, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at The Growing Experience Urban Farm and Market, 750 Via Carmelitos, in Long Beach.
“This Healthy Active Long Beach event will be a fun way for the whole family to learn how to staying active, healthy and fit,” Mayor Bob Foster said.
Hosted by the Long Beach Health Department Healthy Active Long Beach Project and The Growing Experience, the free event will feature information and resources on healthy eating, wellness and physical activity, farm tours and hands-on planting activities, health screenings, food preservation workshops, information on how to apply for W.I.C. (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children), on-site enrollment assistance for the CalFresh program (formerly known as Food Stamps), and lots of fun activities for the whole family.
In addition, residents can also shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at the new Farmers’ Market. “The Growing Experience Farmers’ Market will provide low-income families at Carmelitos and the surrounding North Long Beach community with convenient access to affordable fresh produce, in an area which does not currently have a major grocery store,” said Jimmy Ng, Program Director of The Growing Experience. And as an extra incentive, attendees who bring in a copy of the event flyer can receive a 50 percent discount of fresh produce from The Growing Experience’s Farm Stand the day of the event (flyers can be picked up at The Growing Experience or by vising the Healthy Active Long Beach website and/or Facebook page).
The Healthy Active Long Beach Project’s “Fun with Food and Play” events and The Growing Experience Farmers’ Market are part of the City’s “Let’s Move Long Beach” campaign to increase physical activity and improve nutrition in order to improve the health of Long Beach residents.
Healthy Active Long Beach’s activities and goals assist the Health Department in its efforts to decrease the rate of obesity and chronic disease in Long Beach. Healthy Active Long Beach is funded by USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), through the Network for a Healthy California.
