Local storytellers get ready for the April 3rd show at LB Playhouse

Long Beach Playhouse will host a citywide event attracting writers and performers to participate in the oldest art form known to man. Telling a great story is the stage version of reality TV. It’s fair, with no bias on age, race, sexual orientation, or affluence. Most importantly, it’s fun!

“Coinciding with Long Beach Reads One Book, we chose this time to engage our neighbors and promote community spirit in 2011. Telling and listening to true first-hand tales of love, heroism, embarrassment and laughter is an intimate experience we share as a group. We will enlist actors and writers from Long Beach’s rich artistic community” says, Mariana Williams, Co-producer of Long Beach Greatest Storyteller.

Four Story Slams are planned. The dates are: April 3rd, July 6th, and Oct. 9th, with the final event announcing The Greatest Storyteller in Long Beach on Dec. 29th. Winner will be awarded $200 cash and various prizes.

Storytellers submit five-minute (about three pages written) stories in advance. It must be a true incident from your life. We invite writers, performers, and anyone in the 562 area code! The top ten will be pre-selected for each Story Slam event, plus we’ll take two tales from the audience. Audience and judges pick the top three five-minute stories. Submit stories to:

THE RULES: First prize is $100, second is $5.62. The top three storytellers of each story slam advance to the finals where nine contestants compete for the title, “The Greatest Storyteller in Long Beach.” That cash prize is $200. (Whether the best story is read or told -is up to the audience.)

STORY SLAMS: Are held in the casual atmosphere of the LB Playhouse Gallery and Bar. We will provide a local music act to start the evening off and local author and veteran storyteller Mariana Williams will host. Admission is $5, and each person will vote for their top two stories. The judges’ votes count as 5 points. As votes are tallied, the audience is treated to the music guest. The winners are awarded their cash prizes each night. The show lasts two hours.

JUDGES: The three judges at each story slam are community leaders and sponsors
