Growing Green Roots Receives Grant to Foster Artistic Expression in Children

Growing Green Roots (GGR) is the recipient of a grant from the Long Beach Community Foundation (LBCF) as part of Phase 4 of the Leadership Long Beach Atlantic Corridor Project, popularly referred to as the Connected Corridor.
The grant will help support GGR’s efforts to foster artistic expression in children while supporting education about sustainability and organic gardening. GGR’s first garden was constructed at Whitman Elementary School in Cerritos, and now GGR is bringing its efforts home to Long Beach and adding an artistic element that will be used both as a learning device and as a beautification technique. The Connected Corridor funding will allow GGR to hold an art competition open to Long Beach artists and pay the winners for their contributions, fueling the idea that earning a living as an artist can be a viable option. With the help of Evan Kelly of LBCreative!, there will be an official art opening and a public showing for the selected artists at a local gallery, to be held in mid-November. To closely align with GGR’s garden program, the murals will depict community or garden scenes and will be later transported to Roosevelt to accompany the raised gardens that GGR and the students will have already planted.
With starter plants from local urban farmer Sasha Kanno, founder of Wrigley Garden, children from Kindergarten to 5th grade will grow fruits and vegetables and maintain drought resistant gardens while they learn about sustainable living and the connection between plant and human life. The artist’s murals will further aid in this education process. ”Our partnership grant will bridge our Roosevelt community with nature and art, creating a rich and beautiful environment for our children to learn,” shared Principal Lund of Roosevelt Elementary School.
After the first season, though the mural artwork will remain at Roosevelt, some of the drought resistant plants will be donated to neighboring elementary, middle and high schools to continue flourishing while spreading community connectivity. As the Long Beach Unified School District requires high school students to participate in 40 hours of community service, many of the local high school students are currently completing their community service hours at Roosevelt. This program will encourage even more students to come to Roosevelt to help tend to and maintain the various gardens. This will create ownership through investment of time and effort, expose students of all ages to local artists and artworks and will continue to build a stronger community. “Growing Green Roots is a wonderful example of collaboration among business, school and neighborhood leaders. We couldn’t be more excited to have them as part on this transformational project to build connectivity and community capacity,” said Carina Cristiano, Project Director of the Connected Corridor.
