May is Older Adults Month, a perfect time to get ready to be ‘older’! Assess your readiness to stay healthy and independent at Heart of Ida’s Tools for Independence event on June 3, 2013 am at Rosie the Riveter Park in Long Beach.
Tools for Independence is a free hands-on opportunity especially designed for sedentary or inactive seniors. This event helps you get moving, while learning whether you have the critical strength and balance needed for safe mobility. You can even get a mini balance screen from a physical therapist; and walk away with a plan to stay healthy and independent.
As we all know, the number of baby boomers is growing but their levels of physical activity have not.
To reduce falls and the associated injuries yet keep seniors mobile, many communities have increased their efforts to provide meaningful fitness programs for older adults. According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC): as an older adult, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
The Heart of Ida, a Long Beach nonprofit 501c3 dedicated to helping older adults remain independent, is celebrating Older Adults Month by introducing Tools for Independence based on nationally recommended fall prevention and physical mobility standards. At the same time, Heart of Ida is partnering with our local Meals on Wheels to perform home safety assessments and modifications (such as grab bar installations) for their clients. “Small upgrades such as better lighting, removal of throw rugs and installation of grab bars together with fall prevention programming can make a huge difference in the life of a senior,” explains Keri Reich, Co-founder of Heart of Ida. “Heart of Ida encourages older adults to get and remain fit with proven programs to reduce fall risk and maintain safe mobility”, and Reich adds “we are pleased to offer Tools for Independence free to the Long Beach community”.
The FREE Heart of Ida’s Tools for Independence event is Monday, June 3, 2013 from 8:30 am – 10:00 am at Rosie the Riveter Park, Clark and Conant, Long Beach 90808. Parking is on Clark or at the building next door on Conant.
