Historic Arbor Revitalized at St. Anthony High School

On July 2, representatives from St. Anthony High School’s Class of 1964 formally presented a check to high school President Gina Maguire to underwrite the renovation of the school’s historic Arbor in the Courtyard.
The red bougainvillea-shrouded Arbor bordering the school on 7th Street and Olive Avenue in Long Beach was built over 60 years ago to provide seating and shade for students. Throughout the decades, this was a favored gathering place for students attending St. Anthony, but in recent years, the Arbor’s wooden structure deteriorated. In fact, the decaying wooden structure could no longer support the decades of plant growth and there was a critical need to begin a full renovation project to “Save the Arbor”.
The Save the Arbor alumni appeal resulted in dozens of gifts from St. Anthony graduates, however, the Class of ‘64 decided to take this project on as a class challenge, in honor of their 50th Reunion hosted in June this year, thus ensuring that the project was successfully completed this summer.
According to President Maguire, “The renovation of our historic Courtyard Arbor was a dream we hoped to realize before we celebrated St. Anthony High School’s 95th Anniversary in the fall of 2015. However, this gift from the great Class of 1964, along with gifts from other caring alums, is enabling us to make the dream an immediate reality.”
Demolition of the structure and a “major hair cut” for the venerable bougainvillea plants providing shade and was accomplished over the last few weeks by a team of staff and volunteers. Construction of the new Arbor begins July 29th and the project will be completed by the start of school in August.
The new arbor will be dedicated in honor of Dr. Vincent Esposito, Class of 1964, who passed away last July, along with a dedication honoring the Class of ‘64 on the occasion of their 50th Reunion. Thanks to the generosity of these alums, the Arbor will once again stand strong and proud, providing shelter for many generations of Saints to come.
