Holiday events bring cheer to Long Beach in December
2009-12-06 · By Barbara Holbrook
The left-over turkey is put away and the holiday season is officially in full swing. The city will be filled with goodwill and holiday cheer everywhere you look. For those that like to stroll the streets looking at Christmas lights, there will be decorative lights downtown and uptown, along with Christmas trees and holiday parades, and shopping events with Santa.
Long Beach has a month-long celebration planned for December. The holiday events start the first weekend in December and continue through the season — not to mention all the Long Beach Christmas parades!
See the lights on Daisy Avenue “Christmas Tree Lane”
Don’t miss Daisy Avenue’s 23 lighted and decorated Christmas trees or the Christmas Village that adorns the median. Open all during the holiday season for carloads of cheery and peaceful holiday sightseeing (between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow). Musical entertainment is featured on weekends. For more information, call(562) 570-4450.
Holiday Craft Show on 4th Street
The Long Beach Craft Mafia holiday trunk show has events planned in two Retro Row shops on Saturday, December 12. A bake sale, raffle and holiday shopping will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Songbird, at 2240 East 4th Street and free craft workshops will be offered from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Open, at 2226 East 4th Street. Read more about the Craft Mafia holiday shopping trunk show.
Christmas Candlelight Tours
On December 12-13, starting at 6:30 p.m. each evening, Christmas Candlelight Tours will make their way through the Rancho. Step back to Christmas 1880 and explore holiday customs and daily life at Rancho Los Cerritos. Tour the historic adobe by candlelight with costumed living history characters, and eavesdrop on theatrical vignettes about life in Los Angeles. End the evening with some shopping for unique gifts, and enjoy live holiday music, warm cider and gingerbread out on the lawn. $10 per person. Advance reservations are required; please call (562) 570-1755.
Las Posadas in Long Beach
Starting a new tradition for Long Beach, Tacos Don Chente owners, Javier and Dorian Villaseñor, are hosting the 1st Annual Holiday Las Posadas on Wednesday, December 16, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The holiday event features live music, great food, and a celebration opportunity for the whole family — including the traditional piñata. Tacos Don Chente is located at 101 West Pacific Coast Highway. For more information about Las Posadas, call (562)218-0500.
Rose Park Annual Tree Lighting and Trimming
Bring your friends and join your neighbors in Rose Park on December 17 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Rose Park at 800 Orizaba Avenue to celebrate the holiday season for a tree-trimming ceremony. The free event will include carolers, cookies and hot cider. Don’t forget to bring an ornament to decorate the tree. http://rpna.org
Stroll the Christmas Lights of Naples
The houses around Naples Island put on one of the best displays of Christmas and Hanukkah lights in Southern California. Park in the Mothers’ Beach lot off of Appian Way, or in the marine lots east of Davis Bridge, Marine Stadium, and 54th & Bayshore. Then, take a stroll around the island to enjoy the seasonal light display. Information online at www.naplesca.org
