Households Still Using of a Rooftop Antenna Should Apply for a Digital TV Converter Coupon Today

Congresswoman Laura Richardson today announced that households who have not yet applied for a discount coupon to help purchase a digital TV converter box should do so quickly to ensure that they receive their coupons BEFORE the digital transition deadline on June 12, 2009. Households can still apply, but they may not receive their coupons before the switch to a digital signal occurs.
As a result of the digital transition on June 12, people who have televisions that receive free programming with the use of a rooftop antenna or “rabbit ears” on their television will no longer be able to use their televisions without a digital converter box. In order to continue to watch their favorite programs and keep up-to-date with local and national news, they will need to either purchase a new television that utilizes a digital signal or buy a digital converter box, which they can find at most local electronic retail stores.
Fortunately, Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program to assist households wishing to purchase a converter box. Each household is eligible for up to two coupons that each provide a $40 discount to help defray the cost of one eligible converter box. Boxes range in price from $40 to $80, depending upon the local retail store. Some stores are selling converter boxes that are not eligible under the TV Converter Box Coupon Program. Some of these boxes include features such as a digital video recorder (DVR) or high definition technology. Customers should ask a customer service representative where they can find eligible converter boxes in their local stores.
“It is critically important for people to know that if they are currently using televisions with antennas and have not yet received their digital television coupons, they should go to www.DTV2009.gov today to apply,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “For people who would prefer to apply by phone, they can call the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) DTV Converter Box Coupon Program at 1-888-DTV-2009.”
In order to receive uninterrupted television service, people should apply for a tv converter box coupon today and should purchase their converter boxes by June 12. Anyone having difficulties installing their converter boxes can log onto www.DTV.gov and enter their zip code on the right-hand side of the page. A list of local government vendors will appear who are able to assist with the installation process free of cost.
“It is important for all Americans to know that the digital transitionis important because it will free up the airwaves for our neighborhoods’ first responders,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “This will allow emergency personnel to communicate more effectively, aiding their ability to protect and save lives.”
