Approximately 300 community members participated in the recent Long Beach Health Care Symposium, hosted by Molina Healthcare and Mayor Robert Garcia. The event brought together industry leaders, local businesses and community-based organizations to provide a platform to begin discussing the state of health care in the city. Additionally, Long Beach residents were provided guidance on how to access health care and other community resources. The audience ranged from local college students (California State University, Long Beach City College, American Career College, El Camino College among others) to elected officials such as Mayor Larry Forester of Signal Hill, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell and several city councilmembers.

“Molina Healthcare is dedicated to making health care a priority by eliminating barriers and reducing disparities across all socio-economic backgrounds,” said John Molina, chief financial officer of Molina Healthcare. “We know it takes a village and we are excited to lead the conversation and the solution in helping our community access the resources they need to live long and healthy lives.”

After Mayor Garcia’s opening remarks and an invocation from Pastor Michael C. Brown from St. John Missionary Baptist Church, guests were given the opportunity to attend smaller workshops to further discuss specific topics about health care and to ask questions. These sessions covered topics, such as health care options for small businesses, what local providers can do to help mitigate the residents’ barriers to care and more. The event also included a free lunch, information booths hosted by community organizations, giveaways as well as a keynote presentation by David M. Carlisle, MD from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
