i-love-public-libraryThe annual spare coin drive, I Love My Public Library in support of Long Beach Public Libraries, was unanimously supported for citywide expansion by the Long Beach City Council at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. The fundraising drive officially begins on Valentine’s Day, February 14, and concludes in April, National Library Month.

The fundraising effort, began in 2007 as a partnership between Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, Friends of the Long Beach Public Library (FLBPL), and fifth district businesses has raised more than $2000 for books and materials for local libraries.

“The public library is the one place where anyone can go to access information, to learn, to explore, and to be connected to the community. It is one of the most important institutions a government provides because it is for everyone regardless of age, income, or ability,” commented Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, “that is why I have supported the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library to raise money for books and materials to ensure our branch libraries can continue to serve everyone.”

Since 2007, area businesses and individuals supporting the El Dorado and Ruth Bach Public Libraries have helped raise money to help the two Fifth District libraries continue to provide books and materials for special programs. The annual program, formerly called Library Roundup, has become a powerful way for residents to show how much they care about the vital institution.

The LFBPL also published a list of ten ways Public Library lovers can show how much they care:

  1. Donate Your Spare Change.
  2. Get a Sticker and Wear it Proudly.
  3. Tell your friends to go to their local public library and donate their spare change.
  4. Get a Library Card.
  5. Bring a friend or relative to the public library.
  6. Join Friends of the Long Public Library.
  7. Join the Long Beach Public Library Foundation.
  8. Volunteer your time at the Information Center for People with Disabilities (ICPD) or as a Service Learning Teen Volunteer at all 12 libraries, Call (562) 570-5709.
  9. Tell your Librarian how much you appreciate what they do.
  10. Donate books, magazines (new only) to your local library
