performs at Rancho Los CerritosRancho Los Cerritos announces jazz singer Cris Barber will perform for the July 22 summer concert at the Rancho. Friends and family get the chance to sway to jazz music and enjoy a self-packed picnic dinner. Museum gates will be open for picnicking after 4:30 p.m., and the concert is scheduled from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The concert will be held out in the open garden of the Rancho adobe house, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and/or blankets. The cost of attendance is free.

Cris Barber is an award-winning jazz vocalist from Southern California. In 2004, she won the Orange County Music Award for Best Jazz Artist. She was then nominated four times for the OCMA and once for the Southern California Music Award. Barber utilizes warm and smooth vocals to accentuate a combination of pop and jazz standards much like Victor Young’s “My Foolish Heart,” Cole Porter’s “Love For Sale,” and Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird” to name a few. Her music is often compared to Diana Krall.

Her fourth and most recent album has echoed another winner with the song, “This Moment to Be Free.” Her music hums the tunes of love ballads to thr heart. Barber encompasses various touches of emotions throughout her music. She shows a bit of her tender side on Duke Ellington’s “I Got It Bad,” and the love tune “Be Sure,” then turns a bit funky on the pop finale of “Sunny” completing one fine session of wonderful light hearted contemporary jazz with a twist.

The Cris Barber concert is the second of three summer concerts held this year at Rancho Los Cerritos. The final summer concert will be the Romanza concert performing a mix of traditional and modern Latin jazz on August 26. All concerts begin at 5:30 p.m.

Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is located at 4600 Virginia Road in Long Beach. This beautifully preserved 1844 two-story adobe house and landscaped gardens echo with the rich history of Spanish, Mexican, and American California.
