Part one: The Language of Hatha Yoga. Sanskrit is the classic language of India and the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It is also considered one of the 22 official languages of India. The name Sanskrit means “refined” “consecrated” and “sanctified”. The pre-classical form is the language of the Vedic text, the earliest writings of yoga philosophy. It is also considered one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family.
Most Hatha yoga classes teach the postures using their Sanskrit name along with their English name. Mantras and chants are also spoken in their Sanskrit words. John will provide a history of Sanskrit and its links to Hatha yoga. We will take a look at the basic alphabet and the roots of many of the common yoga posture names. There will be a ‘hands-on’ time for the exploration of writing the Sanskrit letters.
Part two: “Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” and the 8 limbs of yoga. In discussing this well known yoga text we will take a look at the importance of yoga asana (posture) practice with Pranayama to create the health, vitality, flexibility, maximum range of motion required to be able to sit comfortably for meditation. Also the importance of Yamas (self restraints) and the Niyamas (observances) together with Asana and Pranayama to result in strengthening the Mind-Body-Spirit connection.
John Casey has been involved in the study and practice of yoga, meditation, and contemplative philosophies for several decades, culminating in a doctoral degree in Asian and Comparative Philosophy from the University of Hawai’i in 1996. Since that time, he has taught over a hundred courses on World Religions, Buddhism, Sanskrit, and Yoga Studies at Loyola Marymount University and several other southland colleges. To date, he has made six trips to India as a teacher, student, and spiritual pilgrim. Over the last few years, Dr. Casey has been developing seminars and workshops for various yoga studios and meditation centers in Southern California and elsewhere. In this work shop you will learn some of the rich history of one of the oldest psycho-spiritual practices in the world.
