Grammy Award-Winning Singer Judy Collins Takes the Stage at Carpenter Performing Arts Center

Grammy Award-winning singer Judy Collins will help get the audience at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State Long Beach into the holiday spirit as the legendary folk singer performs seasonal favorites and her greatest hits on Dec. 22, 2012.
Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes, and is well known for her classic renditions of “Amazing Grace,” Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” and “Send in the Clowns’ by Stephen Sondheim—which won Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammy Awards. In recent years, she has become a cabaret artist with an annual engagement at Café Carlyle in New York, and released her latest album, Bohemian, in 2011.
Ms. Collins’ career has spanned more than 40 years; she has released more than two dozen albums to become one of the most recognized folk artists of all time. She made her public debut at age 10 performing Mozart’s “Concerto for Two Pianos” but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy Collins’ love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar, releaseing her debut album A Maid of Constant Sorrow at the age of 22.
Collins reached commercial and critical acclaim with the release of Wildflowers in 1968 as it reached No. 5 in the Billboard Charts, became her first gold album, and won the 1968 Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance for “Both Sides Now.” In addition, Collins wrote her memoir, Trust Your Heart, in 1987 and a novel, Shameless, in 1995. A more recent memoir, 2003’s Sanity and Grace, tells of her son Clark’s death in January 1992.
