July 15-21: 100 Days of Summer Continues With Concerts, Movies and Sea Festival Races

100-days-of-summer August 30-Sept 12The Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department is offering hundreds of free and low-cost recreational events under the umbrella of “100 Days of Summer,” which encourages residents to “stay and play” in Long Beach.

The Long Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau has partnered with the Department to create www.100daysofsummer.org, a searchable calendar of free concerts and movies, Long Beach Sea Festival events, El Dorado Nature Center & historic site events, and ideas for spontaneous fun like hiking, biking, golf, tennis, swimming, and youth and teen programs. 

Here’s a look at events from July 15 – 21, 2012:

Movie in the Park present Spy Kids (All the Time in the World): The movie and popcorn are free, and the time spent with family is priceless! Bring a lawn chair, blanket, and picnic-style dinner to share as you enjoy some of your family’s favorite movies.

Summer Concerts at the Nature Center: El Dorado Nature Center will open its gates at 6:30 pm every Thursday for a special summer concert series! Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, a picnic dinner, and your family, and enjoy the talents of local musicians from 7 to 8 pm. $3 per person; free for children 12 and younger. The next concert is the Hula Girls (Hulabilly) on July 19.

Long Beach Municipal Band: Keeping the Beat Alive: Celebrate the 103rd year of the Long Beach Municipal Band with “The Joys of Summer.” Bring a blanket, chairs, food, family, and friends for a night of brilliant music under the stars. Concerts begin at 6:30 pm, and are entirely free. This week’s theme will feature 70’s favorites with “Keeping the Beat Alive,” featuring guest vocalist Meloney Collins.

Long Beach Sea Festival Events July 15-21

Moonlight Movies on the Beach: Every Monday and Tuesday evening, the night sky over Granada Beach will light up with both classic and current movies for the whole family to enjoy! Hosted by Alfredo’s Beach Club, each movie will have food and beverage available for purchase, with movie and parking free. Movies begin at dusk.

  • July 17, “The Muppet Movie” (1979)

Catalina Ski Race: More than 70 water ski teams will ski from the Queen Mary to Avalon and back, with the fastest teams finishing the round trip in less than one hour. These amateur athletes come from around the world, including Australia, England, Belgium and New Zealand, and compete for just the honor to win or the accomplishment to finish. The Catalina Ski Race takes place Saturday, July 21, from 8 am to 3 pm at Hotel Maya, 700 Queensway Drive. www.catalinaskirace.net

Kahakai Outrigger Canoe Club Sprints: Teams from 20 local and out of state canoe clubs will compete in a day of races in various divisions. Kids will participate in sprint races, and adults in sprint relays. The Kahakai Outrigger Canoe Club Sprints will take place Saturday, July 21, from 8 am to 5 pm at Long Beach Marine Stadium, 5255 Paoli Way. www.kahakaioutrigger.com.
