Golf Appreciation Month

Los Angeles celebrates Junior Golfers Appreciation Month and kids play for just $1.

“In the past few years, we have instituted some wonderful new programs for junior golfers in the County of Los Angeles,” explained Supervisor Knabe at a Board of Supervisors meeting in August 2001. “… [We] started an annual summer tradition by creating Junior Golfers Appreciation Month in the month of July.”

Originally introduced in a motion by Supervisors Don Knabe and Mark Ridley-Thomas, the tradition continues in 2013 with July still the official “Junior Golfer’s Appreciation Month” throughout Los Angeles County. Southern California salutes the County’s young golfers, with reduced green fees and special activities at local courses.

During the month of July junior golfers (18 and under) can play golf for $1 at all 17 County golf courses. Discount fees are good after 12:00 p.m., when accompanied with a regular adult fee, senior fee, twilight fee or super-twilight fee. In addition, golf courses will hold a free “Special Skills Day” with activities such as free lessons, clinics, skills challenge contests, and other such events that will improve and promote junior golf participation.

“Youth sports programs have traditionally been valuable recreational activities for the young residents of Los Angeles County,” Knabe said in a statement. “Not only do they offer an opportunity for kids of all ages to learn new physical, social, and mental skills, but youth sports also serve as a crime deterrent. This is a great way for us to show our appreciation to all of our junior golfers who use our County golf courses.
