Kayaking for Kids Journey & Fundraiser to Benefit Dream Street Foundation
2011-07-11 · By Editor
Kayaking for Kids will host a fun-filled celebration to celebrate kayakers as they finish a 29-mile seafaring journey from Catalina Island to Long Beach harbor. Their journey and your support will help send sick children to Dream Street summer camp! The celebration takes place Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Hotel Maya.
For the fourth consecutive year, forty-year old Sean Clancy will set paddle in the sea and kayak from Catalina Island to Long Beach raising funds and awareness for Dream Street Foundation. Accompanying Clancy for the second straight year is fellow kayaker Bill Rasmussen, both of whom are originally from Huntington Beach CA.
New this year, the kayakers are reversing their 29-mile course to arrive at Hotel Maya, overlooking the Queen Mary in Long Beach harbor for a welcome back celebration. Setting the compass heading 003-degrees for this grueling challenge, kayakers will depart Avalon harbor at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 13th, expecting to land ashore between 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Long Beach. This is a seven-hour, 29-mile journey in a one-man, seafaring kayak. So far, Sean’s event raised over $50,000 dollars since the inception in 2008 to support the Dream Street cause of sending critically and chronically ill children to summer camp…free-of-charge.
Dream Street started in 1988, and each year over 650 kids, ages 4-14 from Southern CA and other parts of the country are given a free, one-week joyous experience at sleepover camp. Volunteer medical and counselor staff spend endless hours with every child who needs special help, TLC or 24/7 medical assistance. “For one week out of the year, we make believe they are healthy youngsters, allowing them to feel normal and secure,” say Dream Street co-founders Billy and Patty Grubman. Camp Dream Street in Ojai CA was held for July 3-10, when campers signed the kayaks with heartfelt best wishes for a safe and appreciative journey.
The Kayaking for Kids celebration event is Saturday, August 13, 2011 12:00-3:00pm at Hotel Maya 700 Queensway Drive, Long Beach. The event will consist of Buffet lunch, prizes, live music, and more, a fun-filled family event!
Tickets for the event are Adults $35.00 Kids (under 12): $10.00 (donations are welcome). To order tickets online visit KayakingForKids.org or, call (424) 248-0696. Space is limited and the deadline to purchase is August 6th.
Clancy, an Iron Man participant, was raised to push himself mentally, physically and spiritually. During the kayaking excursion he “benefits while benefiting.” Helping ill children enjoy a fun-filled camp experience motivates him, and he wants to inspire others to do something, anything, as a fundraising project. Rasmussen was inspired by Clancy’s feat and will paddle the sea in his own kayak for a second consecutive journey.
Upon arrival at the dock owned by Hotel Maya, a DoubleTree by Hilton, young patients from Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and their families, plus other well-wishers and donors will gather for a joyous celebration. The event is sponsored by Hotel Maya, Signal Hill Petroleum, Global Payments and Creative Communications – companies that acknowledge and support the needs of less fortunate children, and the efforts put forth by Clancy, Rasmussen and Dream Street Foundation.
