The Kenneth Walker Dance Project to Debut The Seasons
2016-07-21 · By Editor
The Kenneth Walker Dance Project presents its annual homebase performance at the Martha B, Knoebel Dance Theater on the campus of California State University, Long Beach, August 13 & 14, 2016. The Seasons is KWDP’s most ambitious work to date. Choreographed by Kenneth Walker, The Seasons marks the culmination of the KWDP’s artistic growth, in the style of contemporary ballet that KWDP has been developing.
Rounding out the program will be audience favorites, Suburban Symphony and Focus on the Middle Distance. Focus on the Middle Distance features music by Rohi Kena Custage, a former dancer who Kenneth Walker met while at the Minnesota Ballet. Suburban Symphony was the first dance created by Kenneth Walker for his company, KWDP. Both dances have been performed extensively over the years. The opening duet of Suburban Symphony has been performed at festivals and galas throughout Los Angeles, in Virginia and South Carolina. Focus on the Middle Distance has been performed in New York. Both works are audience and dancer favorites, and complete this program choreographed entirely by Kenneth Walker.
KWDP began in the South Bay, where Kenneth Walker was raised. KWDP’s home season at the Martha B. Knoebel began in 2009 and this year, due to continued audience growth, KWDP is presenting two dates of performances.
Comments Artistic Director and choreographer Kenneth Walker, “As I work with my dancers on the new choreography and as we progress through the rehearsal phase, I am thrilled to see that The Seasons is evolving into a beautiful dance. The dancers are pushing themselves artistically and athletically. There is an emotional component that is potentially heart wrenching but ultimately, uplifting. I believe that our audience will find great depth to this work and I am excited to debut it at the beautiful performance space that I consider to be KWDP’s home, the Martha B, Knoebel Dance Theater.”
