Annual Kids Fishing Derby returns to El Dorado Park November 20.

Kids ages 5-15 are invited to cast a line in the water during the Annual Youth Fishing Derby at the lake in Area II at El Dorado East Regional Park lake in Long Beach. Individuals over 16 years of age may participate but are required to have a California State Fishing License.

The fishing derby is designed to give boys and girls who live in urban areas an opportunity to enjoy a fishing experience in or close to their own neighborhood, with rod & reels, tackle, bait, and assistance provided.

The free fishing derby will take place this year on Saturday, November 20, 2010.

Volunteers and staff of the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation will be on hand to lend rods and reels, and to educate kids on proper fishing techniques and etiquette. Bait will be provided free of charge while supplies last. Youth that want to may also fish with their own poles.

Registration takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. when the fishing session begins. At 1:00 p.m. the fishing will be followed by a congratulatory ceremony and a free drawing. The lake will be open to registered Fishing Derby participants only. Persons 16 years or older will not have access to the lake until the Derby ends at 1 p.m.

Sponsored by the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation, in cooperation with the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, the event is free except for a $7 vehicle entry fee into the park.

Daniel Hernandez is the host and producer of “Sports Fishing with Dan Hernandez,” a weekly television fishing series. The Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation holds free fishing events throughout California and uses fishing to build youths self-esteem and self-confidence, working to ensure that every child gets an opportunity to experience the thrill of sport fishing and a basic introduction in the marine sciences.

The lakes at El Dorado Regional Park are stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game. The fish (catfish and trout) are bred and raised at hatcheries and planted in rural and urban lakes in support of, and to promote, freshwater fishing.

The free kid’s fishing derby takes place Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Don’t miss this day in the sun at the Kids Fishing Derby. There will be lots of free prizes for the kids and plenty of fish to catch too.
