About the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club:

Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club was started in late 1977 in response to the Briggs Initiative, an anti-gay-and-lesbian initiative to bar gay and lesbian teachers from the classroom. After Briggs was defeated, the club continued as a political voice for the community, recognized by both the California Democratic Party and the California Democratic Council, and soon after its inception received the award for the largest growing club in California. Over the years, the club’s work in campaigns made its endorsement a sought-after asset. The club strives to continue to be a voice not only for gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, but also as a proponent of human and civil rights for all minorities and an advocate for progressive issues.
