LB Sunday Market: Fresh food and fresh events

share this:

fresh food from farmers marketThe Long Beach Sunday Market on the Longfellow playground has been open now, for three months! We started with 3 farmers and a small food court, and have grown substantially in a short time. We now have 12 farmers who bring us a brilliant variety of seasonal produce, fresh cut flowers, juice, nursery stock (plants and shrubs) and fresh eggs.

Right now at the market you will find the best locally grown citrus, including the perennial favorite tangerines! Known in California as Cuties, these seedless, easy to peel orbs are at the top of their game-as well as all kinds of lemons, limes, oranges, pomelos and grapefruit.

It’s also the beginning of strawberry season, strawberries will grow year round here in So Cal, but they love sunny days and cool nights. Early spring is when they taste best. When it gets hot you have to water more and that washes out the flavor!

Science fair idea – try planting two pots of strawberries and over water one to show your kids the difference in flavor. Oh, and the price is right on berries too. Three baskets of just picked, perfectly ripe berries can be yours for around $5. Now is the time to can up that freshness and make some homemade jam! Look for a canning demo and instructions in March.

Packed your pantry and filled your crisper? Then stop by for breakfast, brunch or lunch. We are open until 2pm, so if you have Sunday morning activities, pop in after! There is always someone you know noshing over by the benches, and you can try several items if you have someone to share with! We can now boast freshly made mini donuts, the crepe stand, made to order gourmet breakfast sandwiches, tamales, hot dogs, tacos, pozole and menudo, kettle corn, fresh pastries, bakery items, and the hummus table. And don’t forget to buy your beverages from the Hughes Instrumental Music’s drink booth! They are raising money to keep their program intact.

February 28: This Sunday at the Market

Lots of music this Sunday! We are thrilled to have two talented acts visiting the market. Cory Joseph will be back and local Michelle Mangione is going to play in the morning. Stop by and say hi, pick up a cd, and put next Friday – First Friday, in your date book to see Michelle at the Mirage on Bixby Road.

Project Oasis’ Chess Club – every Sunday the chessboards are out from 10:00am-12:00noon. Stop by and play couple of games with our resident chess experts.

The Long Beach Sunday Market in California Heights will kick off their 4th Sunday Chef Demos this week, February 28 at 11am. Sam Paano of Gourmet Conspiracy, who also brings us the weekly market report via podcast, will launch the latest market activity with a quick shopping spree and chat with the farmers. Sam will demonstration a couple of preparation methods using market produce and field questions from the crowd.

March Events at the Market

Sunday March 7, we are proud to be the host site of the Long Beach Public Library Foundation’s All Day Read of The Soloist. We will have 36 readers taking the microphone for 10 minutes each, reading the book aloud from 9am to 1pm. You might see a Principal and Librarian you know if you get there early! Vangie Ogg will also be there with her camera. She is setting up a photo studio for musical portraits. Bring your instrument for a special photo. A framed portrait of your budding musician makes a great gift for the relatives! Also on March 7th, Dramatic Results will be back, this time with a basketry workshop!
Sunday March 14th, the Hughes Goes Green team will demonstrate how to build a compost bin. Informational material will also be available.

Sunday March 21: Longfellow Legacy will be out to talk about the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament. Stop in to see how you can participate.

Sunday March 28: Chef Louise Solzman from Delius Restaurant will be presenting a cooking demonstration.

Lastly, Longfellow will be hosting another terrific produce bag fundraiser! Find Heather Morrison this Sunday and sign up — if you’d like to help in the booth.
