First Fridays celebrates its 7th Anniversary with “Day of the Dead” in Bixby Knolls. Businesses will participate in an altar contest and will host themed face painting, music, sugar skull coloring, and tasty treats in honor of the holiday.
Every month we celebrate the arts, but in October First Fridays is going BIG! Art-Ober honors those creative souls painting, sculpting, and strumming to their own beat.
Enjoy: Live art and interactive art activities, local band MOVE will perform Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety in front of the BKBIA office; pop-up art galleries; photo ops; indie rock; politicos; break dancers; goats and chickens; chalk zones; live sculptures; the Knolls Ranger’s 132nd birthday party at Oh Very Young; free books; gift items; antiques; the Big Red Bus; and plenty of the unexpected.
Attention all cool cats, beatniks, and boppers…First Fridays goes “All That Jazz” on September 6th. Can you dig? So take five and get in the mood for jazz sounds from Dixieland to Bebop.
Winners of the Summer Shutters photo contest will be showcased at First Fridays in August.

The 5th Annual Bixby Knolls Tree & Menorah Lighting Ceremony will take place by the fountains at Nino’s Italian Restaurant, 3853 Atlantic Avenue, beginning AT 6:00PM. The entire community is invited to come celebrate this tradition with the lighting of the Christmas Tree and Hanukah Menorah, listen to holiday music, and enjoy some hot chocolate.

Today, the Long Beach Health Department kicked off “Fresh Air Dining LB,” a new program designed to provide smoke-free outdoor dining options for Long Beach residents and visitors in partnership with local business associations, restaurants and community groups.
The Bixby Knolls Literary Society has selected My Antonia By Willa Cather for its October discussion. The meeting will take place on October 19, 2011 at the Expo Arts Center.

On Wednesday, September 14th, 2011, Fresh & Easy opened a new store on Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach’s 7th District.
Even with the uncertainty of the Redevelopment Agency, the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association continues to move ahead with its RDA-funded programs for this fiscal year. The latest project was the installation of new “feature” banners along Atlantic Avenue and Long Beach Blvd.
