Guests at the International quilt Festival can browse a special exhibit of nearly 500 quilts at Preview Night on July 22.

It’s almost time for the 2010 edition of International Quilt Festival/Long Beach!

The annual show, sale, and quiltmaking academy will feature close to 500 quilts, textile artworks, and wearable art garments on display; close to 100 classes, lectures, and special events; and shopping in more than 300 booths selling quilts, fabrics, patterns, notions, books, machines, sewing supplies, crafts and gifts.

Within the event is Make It University!, a special area of the show floor featuring mixed-media, textile arts, paper, and fiber crafts. Developed in collaboration with Cloth Paper Scissors magazine and its editor Pokey Bolton, Make It University! includes teaching showcases, workshop projects, special exhibits, vendors, and Open Studios, where artists demonstrate right on the show floor.

Patchwork is the brainchild of local clothing designer Nicole Stevenson and her aunt Delilah Snell, owner of eco-boutique The Road Less Traveled. The two native Orange County ladies wanted to celebrate local handmade goods, and so transformed Buffalo street in Santa Ana’s Museum District. Starting in 2007, the event now attracts over 800 people with over 70 vendors and covered by NPR and the OC Weekly.

“What started as modest showcase of local talent, has blossomed into a huge event,” says Stevenson. “the demand is huge — we have had to create a second location in Long Beach.”

The emphasis is on handmade items you can’t find at the mall, presented by the artisans that created these original pieces.

Receive free health screenings, information on healthy living, and access to health care, beauty and fitness experts and products. St. Mary Medical Center is returning as the event’s sponsor and will provide hospital staff to conduct complimentary health screenings such as cholesterol testing and glucose screening.

The American Red Cross will be signing donors up for the May 24th Belmont Shore blood drive.

The Belmont Shore Health, Beauty and Fitness Fair will take place in the 5200 block of East Second Street and on neighboring side streets that intersect with Second Street.

Vendors will be on hand from 9:00am until 4:00pm and the staff of St. Mary Medical Center will provide their services from 9:00am – 2:00pm.
