The 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. camp took place Mon., Aug. 1 – Sat., Aug. 6. In previous years, Justin has had the opportunity to do service projects in Germany, Spain, Zambia, and in the U.S., but this year he wanted to do a service project in his hometown of Long Beach and came up with this idea. The camp was funded by a generous grant from an anonymous family foundation to Rudd’s nonprofit “Community Action Team,” and the deserving 14 students had no worry about getting around the Southland or paying for the opportunities during the week.
Read the rest of 14 Long Beach High School Students “Explore, Dream, & Discover” at “Camp Justin!”

On Thursday, March 3, just before 10:30 a.m., Long Beach Firefighters responded to a house on fire in the 4800 block of Bentree Avenue after a Long Beach Gas Department employee saw large amounts of black smoke coming from a home.

When the fire engine arrived they discovered heavy black smoke coming from the back of the house and attic vents. After forcing their way through the front door, firefighters wasted no time in stretching a hoseline inside for an aggressive attack on the interior fire. Firefighters and paramedics quickly pulled a backup line to the rear of the home while the truck crew laddered the roof to cut a hole and relieve the intense heat and the heavy smoke below.
Read the rest of LBFD Use Canine Resuscitation, Save Dog from House Fire

With a budget of just under $1.5 million, Reservoir Dogs launched one of this generation’s most lauded filmmaker careers – Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill series, and Inglorious Basterds are all award-winners, and his work supporting and collaborating with filmmakers such as Robert Rodriguez and Chan-wook Park has led to more opportunities to experience great independent cinema from visionary artists. Oft-imitated but never improved upon, Reservoir Dogs was an animal unlike anyone had ever seen: a little bit Mean Streets, a little bit John Woo, but with a brand of dialogue and a disregard for narrative chronology that felt refreshing and new, and that would ultimately land Tarantino an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his follow up, 1994′s Pulp Fiction.
Read the rest of Mr. White, Mr. Pink, & Mr. Brown Stop By The Art Theatre Tonight

In 2010, 21 infected bats have been identified.

With an unusually high number of rabid bats recorded in Los Angeles County so far this year, the Department of Public Health is reminding all residents to avoid touching any wild animals, especially bats. So far in 2010, 21 rabid bats have been detected countywide, compared to an average of 10 per year.

Bats are protected by federal law and are an important part of our ecosystem. In nature, about 1 in 1000 to 1 in 10,000 bats is infected with rabies. However when a sick bat is found, the risk of that bat having rabies is much higher; approximately 10 percent. Bats seen flying in daylight, or found on the ground, are more likely to have rabies.

Three rabid bats this year had direct contact with family pets (2 dogs, one cat) this year—just another reason it’s important to vaccinate your pets. Dogs and cats with current vaccines that have come into contact with rabid animals may be re-vaccinated and kept in quarantine for 30 days to ensure they have not been infected by rabies.

Although bats are the animals that are most likely to carry rabies in Los Angeles county. Most bats do not have rabies, and try to avoid contact with people and pets.
Read the rest of Cases of Rabid Bats Double in L.A.
