The “I Dig Long Beach” tree-planting project funded by a Port of Long Beach grant is doing more than greening neighborhoods and building community pride – it’s also providing a chance for local businesses to participate.

Long Beach Vice Mayor Robert Garcia has proposed the creation of a Technology and Innovation Commission to advise the Council on new technology, investing in technological innovation and infrastructure, and to serve as a clearinghouse for ideas to enhance the City’s use of technology and its place in the tech economy.
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners gave preliminary approval Monday to a 40-year, $4.6 billion lease with Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) for the Middle Harbor property, clearing the way for a final vote on the largest deal of its kind for any U.S.

For the second consecutive year, Sen. Ted W. Lieu of Torrance was named by a national government-policy publication as one of the nation’s top ‘legislators to watch.’
“At a time when politicians are about as popular as a sewage treatment plant being built next to your house, it may seem like poor taste to assemble a list of state legislators who are rising stars,” the editors of Governing Magazine wrote in their January 2012 issue, where Lieu was one of 12 state lawmakers, equally divided between Democrats and Republicans, identified out of thousands nationwide.
The Board of Directors of Leadership Long Beach (LLB) formally named Jeff Williams as its Executive Director at its October board meeting. Williams has served as interim Executive Director since December 2010 and will continue to manage the organization’s community development leadership programs, lead fundraising efforts, cultivate alumni activity and represent the organization at community events.
An innovative regional environmental project to prevent hundreds of tons of trash from reaching the Long Beach coastline has been completed.
The collaborative project, funded by $10 million in Federal Stimulus funds, involved the City of Long Beach and 15 upriver cities working together as the Los Angeles Gateway Authority.
