The Art Exchange debuts at First Fridays with an interactive “Make a Mandala” activity in the North Room of Expo, 4321 Atlantic. The entire family is encouraged to attend and get creative.

Everyone is invited to attend the one-year-wedding-anniversary-vow-renewal-ceremony of Bixby Knolls locals, Laura and Wade Ashley, taking place at 7:30pm at Melinda McCoy’s Flowers, 611 E. Carson. Beginning Monday, January 31st, fans of the City Of Long Beach are welcome to enter to win a custom tattoo.

On Wednesday, February 2nd, Long Beach Clothing Co. will select one person that best describes why they deserve a custom Long Beach tattoo. The winner will submit their desired artwork to Thomas from 310 Tattoo who will prepare and tattoo the winner inside Long Beach Clothing Co this Friday night during the monthly First Fridays event in Bixby Knolls. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and watch the tattoo process live.

The 3rd Annual Bixby Knolls Tree & Menorah Lighting Ceremony will take place by the fountains at Nino’s Italian Restaurant, 3853 Atlantic Avenue, beginning at 6:00pm. The entire community is invited to come celebrate this tradition with the lighting of the tree and Hanukah Menorah, listen to carols, and enjoy some hot chocolate. As this will be a community tree, the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association is encouraging the tree decorations be donated from area businesses, schools, and residents. Ornaments can either be dropped off at the BKBIA office at 4313 Atlantic Avenue prior to December 3, or brought to the tree lighting ceremony on December 3.

After an eight month search, clothing store will soon re-open its doors.

“Where the hell did you guys go?”

That’s what we’ve heard every day since March when we departed The Pike. After nearly eight months of searching the City high and low for perfect place to settle down, we met Blair Cohn at the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association. Blair convinced us that Bixby Knolls was the place to be. His enthusiasm for the community is unparalleled. Bixby Knolls clearly offered many benefits, not only to Long Beach Clothing Co., but to its customers; abundant free parking, unique mom & pop shops as well as eateries-o-plenty.

Long Beach writers are invited to share their work at an open mic night.

As part of the Bixby Knolls First Friday event, on Friday November 5, from 7 to 9 pm, the California Writers Club of Long Beach will host an open mic evening at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, 4105 Atlantic Avenue. Members of the club and of the audience are invited to read their own family-appropriate prose for up to 3 minutes. If there are gaps between readers, then attendees will take turns reading from their favorite authors.

Working with Operation Gratitude, Doodlekins, and local businesses, the team hopes to collect travel sized items, handmade scarves, monetary donations, and more. The team hopes to work with local businesses to set up collection boxes throughout Lakewood and Long Beach.

There is a collection bucket at the Long Beach Depot For Creative Reuse, at 320 Elm Avenue in Long Beach. You can also send donations via postal mail, or arrange for pick-up in and around Long Beach.

Several hundred 4×6 images depicting Long Beach submitted for the Say Cheese Long Beach! 24 hour digital photo contest will be unveiled Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at the Expo building, during the Bixby Knolls First Fridays. The public is invited to view the exhibit and watch as approximately $1,500 is awarded at the awards ceremony. There is no charge to attend.

Some 100 seasoned and amateur photographers spent August 28 & 29 all over Long Beach immortalizing the city through digital photography. Each participant was welcome to submit 10-12 images to be judged for the contest and to be considered for the exhibit. A photo book is expected to be created with the images after the exhibit. The 24-hour timeframe from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday offered young and old a chance to explore their creative, humorous or serious side to generate a blended expression of our community.

First Fridays

First Fridays has new traditions that started last month. Attendees are no longer just spectators but active participants!  People are encouraged to bring something to stick on the ”Leave Something Behind” collage. Post a penny, photo, leaf, hair pin, cuff link, heirloom, or anything in your pocket to create a unique abstract collection.  Also, bring your creativity for our community art piece where you pick up the pen and draw, sign your name, write a poem, or leave your mark.
