Don’t miss the 2nd Annual Long Beach Green! Festival

The 2nd annual Green Long Beach! Festival will is set for this weekend May 22. Join in the eco-friendly fun to support a sustainable Long Beach on Saturday from 10am – 10pm in the East Village Arts District.

This year’s festival theme, “Turning the Tide” brings together businesses, government and individuals, to encourage open discussion and promote awareness.

The Long Beach Green Festival will include a whole day of eco-minded activities: Educational Sustainability Classes & Workshops; Visual Arts displays; live performing arts; public discussions; interactive informational and business booths; and the Saturday Organic Farmer’s Market.

Weekly Meditation group starts at Catalyst Community Center

The Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center will launch a regular Zen meditation program in Long Beach. The first meeting is planned for Saturday, April 10 in the East Village.

Starting at 8 a.m. there will be basic meditation instruction, followed by meditation until 9 a.m. Then there will be a brief period of work practice and social time. During this time participants can help to set up the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market, and even shop at the market.

From 9:45 a.m. until about 10:45 a.m., there will be a free public talk about Zen practice given by Arthur Wayu Kennedy, one of Tenshin, Roshi’s senior students.

Those who cannot make the entire program, should feel free to attend whatever part they can. After the talk, there will be time for participants to socialize and eat lunch at the Farmer’s market or at a local restaurant.

The Kids from A2Z perform at East Village Farmers Market

The East Village Farmers Market is becoming a fun place to have lunch on Saturdays. For the past couple weeks, Catalyst Community and Raw Inspiration has partnered together to add a more inviting climate to the Saturday morning East Village Farmers Market on 1st Street between Linden Avenue and Elm Avenue. The Market is open from 9:00am – 2:00pm with scheduled entertainment beginning at 11:00am. Each week’s line up may feature local artists, musicians, dancers, performers, poets and/or spoken word artists followed by an Open Mic.

This week, on Saturday, April 3, The Kids from A2Z will be performing at the Market. They are a youth vocal group consisting of friends from the ages of 4 to 19. Each of the performers brings their own style of music into the group. They started singing at a local coffee shop one year ago and the group has since grown to include 22 kids who all love to sing and perform.

Monthly brunch aims to be Catalyst for community connections

Catalyst Community will begin hosting a brunch every first Sunday of each month starting Sunday, February 7 from 11:00am – 2:00pm. These brunches provide an opportunity for people from diverse communities to connect and hear about what’s happening in other parts of the city.

The brunch will be held at the home of Catalyst founder Eric Leocadio, 2110 Mira Mar Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90815. Participants are asked to bring a potluck entrée and either orange juice or champagne. “Sunday brunch and mimosas are always a great way to relax and meet new friends,” says Leocadio. This will be a great way of exploring how you and your friends might want to impact the community.

EverythingLongBeach.com recently spoke with Eric Leocadio, Executive Director/Founder of Catalyst Community, via email. They talked about the inspirations and challenges of running a nonprofit organization in Long Beach.

How long has Catalyst Community been around?

We incorporated in April 2006 here in Long Beach. After investing a year in 2008 for team building and organizational development, we became active and public with our current mission in January 2009.

Describe Catalyst Community. Tell us a little about your nonprofit, your mission, the people you serve or your goals.

Catalyst Community is a grassroots non-profit organization with a vision to see every area and region inspired with a greater sense of community, collaboration and citizenship through meaningful relationships.

Catalyst Community opens space for neighborhood networking, inspiration

Come celebrate the Grand Opening of Catalyst Community’s new space in the East Village on Saturday, September 12 from 4:00-10:00 p.m. The celebration will feature live art from local artists Ana Salatino and Ryan Keiser, 3D art sculptures, 2D drawings and paintings, and a live web cast projection of our GreenLBCreative! exhibit at Phantom Galleries.

The celebration at 430 E. 1st Street also coincides with the Latin American Parade & Festival happening on the same street right in front of the new Catalyst Space, and also coincides with the 2nd Saturday Art Walk happening on the cross street on Linden Avenue.
