Just in time for Mother’s Day The Aquarium of the Pacific staff is celebrating the birth of the first male harbor seal at the institution, which was born on May 1, 2013.
Bixby is met by her mother Shelby and Aquarium husbandry staff members as she enters the Seals & Sea Lions Habitat.
Meet Bixby, the first seal born at the Aquarium of the Pacific. The nearly four-month-old harbor seal made her debut today joining the other animals in the Aquarium’s Seal & Sea Lion Habitat.
Most seals give birth to young starting at four to five years of age. Shelby, one of the Aquarium’s female harbor seals, is 16 years old and gave birth to her first pup today. The newborn female seal weighs approximately 20 pounds.
