The Long Beach Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a robbery suspect wanted in connection with three armed robberies to businesses occurring in the southeast area of Long Beach since Thursday night.

In each of the incidents the suspect enters the business and demands cash, while showing a handgun.  Once he gets the cash, he exits the business and flees on a bicycle. It appears that the suspect is acting alone, and so far no one has been injured.

On Thursday, January 26, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department’s South Patrol Division will be hosting a leadership forum, which will be held in the Long Beach Police Department’s Community Room, located at 400 West Broadway, Long Beach.

South Division Commander John Benedetti and his staff will be on hand to promote discussion and exchange information with community leaders and concerned residents about what is taking place in their neighborhoods. Recent crime trends and how they are being addressed will also be discussed.

On Wednesday, two men were charged with the murder of five people at a homeless encampment in 2008.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe released a statement following the arrest of two men involved in the murder of five people, four of whom were homeless, in the City of Long Beach at a homeless encampment on November 2, 2008:

“I am proud of the diligent investigation conducted by the Long Beach Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office that ultimately brought the suspects behind this heinous crime to justice,” said Supervisor Knabe.

“This was a gruesome crime that took the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our community and the County of Los Angeles will not stand for such a deplorable act. The City of Long Beach is safer with these men behind bars.”

Two male adult victims were standing on the sidewalk at the northeast corner of Long Beach Boulevard and 68th Street. A gray sedan approached the intersection driving northbound on Long Beach Boulevard. The sedan stopped at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 68h Street. The male suspect(s) shot from the driver’s side of the vehicle striking both victims in the upper torso area. The suspects’ gray sedan fled the scene east bound on 68th Street. The abandoned suspects’ vehicle was located in the City of Long Beach shortly after the shooting.

On Tuesday, January 3, 2012, a Long Beach Police East Division officer responded to the alley in the 1500 block of Sherman Place to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a Christmas tree fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and the officer began investigating the incident. A second East Division officer responding to assist discovered a second Christmas tree engulfed in flames in the 2300 block of E. 15th Street, and observed a male juvenile flee from the scene. The officer began setting a perimeter, and then using the fire extinguisher his vehicle was equipped with, was able to put out that fire. The Fire Department then responded and extinguished a third fire located in the alley in the 1500 block of Stanton Place.

On Friday, December 30, 2011, Long Beach police officers arrested 33-year-old Andrew Dodson at his Long Beach residence on a drug charge and transported him to the Long Beach Police Department. He was booked and processed without incident, and placed into a jail cell at approximately 9:05 p.m. A jail detention officer making rounds discovered the inmate, who was alone at the time, hanging from the jail cell bars by his sweatpants at approximately 10:53 p.m. He was immediately freed from the bars and jail staff, including a registered nurse who is staffed in the facility, began life-saving efforts without delay. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and took over-life saving efforts while transporting him to a local hospital. He was placed in ICU and listed in critical condition, where he remained until he was pronounced deceased on January 1, 2012.

Officers working a two-officer car were on patrol in full uniform and in a marked black and white police vehicle when they heard a gunshot coming from the 1700 block of Cherry Avenue. They drove to the area to investigate when they came across a group of subjects. One of the subjects, identified as 33-year-old Chhann Chhaim of Long Beach, attempted to walk away from the officers and refused to stop. The investigation later revealed that prior to the officers arriving on scene, he had fired his weapon into the air. As Chhann walked away from the arriving officers, he dropped a handgun. A second subject in the group, identified as 25-year-old Songha Lewis and also from Long Beach, picked up the gun and started running down the sidewalk in the direction of one of the officers and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The Long Beach Police Department would like to remind parents that Section 9.58.010 of the Long Beach Municipal Code states: “It is unlawful for any minor under the age of eighteen (18) years to remain in or upon any ‘public place’ as defined in Section 9.02.090, between the hours of 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following day.”

On Saturday, December 10, 2011, the Long Beach Police Department’s Traffic Division conducted a motorcycle enforcement operation from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. targeting areas that are frequented by motorcyclists and where collisions are known occur. In an effort to improve motorcycle safety, the officers assigned to this operation focused on enforcing moving and/or equipment violations pertaining to motorcyclists, as well as to stop motorcyclists and motorists who may be impaired. When police arrived, they found the two individuals, each having sustained apparent gunshot wounds. The female subject, a 27-year-old from Long Beach, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The male subject, a 26-year-old and also from Long Beach, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

On Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to the area of 36th Street and Orange Avenue in regards to a call that an elderly male had wandered away from his home in the area, and had not been found.

Dispatchers determined that the subject had received a free emergency locator bracelet offered by the Long Beach Police Department’s Safe Reunion/Long Beach program. Within about 10 minutes of activating the device, officers located the man a little more than 2 miles away from his home. He was uninjured, and transported back to his home and reunited with his family.

On October 2, 2011, at approximately 1:08 a.m., Long Beach officers responded to a restaurant in the 100 block of Marina Drive regarding an adult male and adult female who were victims of a shooting. The investigation revealed that the 31-year-old male victim had been standing out in front of the restaurant when he was approached by a group of male gang members. Words were exchanged and the incident escalated into a physical altercation. At that time, a subject within the group produced a handgun and fired at the victim, striking him in the upper body. A 31-year-old female who was in the area was also struck by gunfire in the lower body. Both victims were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The group of suspects fled the area and remained outstanding. The shooting was assigned to the Gang Enforcement Section and the investigation

On October 11, 2011, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Long Beach Police responded to a “shots fired” call in the 400 block of West Anaheim Street. Once officers arrived, they found 34-year-old Antwan Johnson of Rancho Cucamonga, who had been stabbed. Victim Johnson was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced deceased two days later, on October 13, 2011, as a result of injuries sustained in the attack.

Los Angeles County District Attorney, Steve Cooley

Today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office released the findings of their investigation of an officer involved shooting involving two Long Beach Police Department officers. The shooting occurred on December 12, 2010, at a residence in the 5300 block of East Ocean Boulevard, and resulted in the death of Mr. Douglas Zerby. Additionally, Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell is also releasing his findings of the shooting.
