If there were any dusty sailors, following Saturday night’s Mount Gay Rum party at Long Beach Yacht Club, it wasn’t evident in the level of racing on the final day of Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week (LBRW).
Competitors greeted the day head-on, with tight racing in 14 classes on three windward-leeward and random leg courses.

Chris Steele and team, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, have won the Ficker Cup trophy following a nearly flawless regatta, surrendering only two races over the course of three days; and winning a spot in next week’s Congressional Cup regatta.
The Long Beach community has been extremely responsive to supporting Long Beach BLAST’s [Better Learning for All Students Today] sixth annual breakfast event. For the first time ever, the event is sold out, with 260 guests expected to attend.

Swimmer Jessica Hardy was named the 2011 Long Beach Aquatic Athlete of the Year at an awards dinner and fundraiser hosted by the Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America Foundation last Thursday night, Nov. 10th.
Hardy was honored for capturing the world title in the 50 meter breaststroke and taking a silver medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai this summer.
The Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America Foundation will host its third annual Aquatic Athlete of the Year ceremony on November 10, 2011, with an awards dinner and special reception with Long Beach Olympians at Keesal, Young & Logan.
The Long Beach Branch NAACP Fit & Focus Program will conduct the 2011 Summer Camps in Golf, Tennis, and Sailing Camps. These free camps normally cost up to five hundred dollars or more. Fitness and Focus camps promote life-long fitness and health by introducing non-traditional sports and activities.

The 47th annual running of the Congressional Cup, one of the oldest and most prestigious match race sailing events in the world, is scheduled March 22-26, 2011 (Tuesday through Saturday). The one-on-one match race format, as used in the America’s Cup, is raced over a short course with intense action as close as physically possible to spectators on the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.
Fundraising efforts are in high gear as The Swim 2010 surpasses the $25,000 mark, moving closer to the $40,000 goal set by The Dawn Patrol back in May. Momentum is building from individual donations, sponsorship funds from over 22 local businesses and ticket donations to the August 1st Celebration Party at the Long Beach Yacht Club.
More than 200 young sailors from 6-15 years of age will participate in the 23rd Annual Jessica Uniak Memorial Beach-to-Bay Regatta on Thursday, July 29.
Sailing Sabots and Lasers, the participants will start at 9:45 a.m.
