The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation (SYF), in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Friday launched an essay contest to honor the great life and teachings of Dr. Maya Angelou.
The contest, which is open to youth ages 7 to 17 years who reside in the County of Los Angeles, encourages children to learn more about Angelou’s life, the challenges she overcame, and how she championed for civil rights and truth.
On May 29, 2014, multiple felony charges were filed against two Long Beach residents for their involvement in several street robberies in the Cities of Long Beach and Lakewood.
Between March 26, 2014, and April 18, 2014, four street robberies occurred in Long Beach.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will hold its Emerging Leaders Graduation today from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the agency’s main facility at 800 W. Pacific Coast Hwy. The 24 students graduating from this class are men and women ex-offenders and gang members, their friends, family members and community members who are all on a path to work toward a better life.
