Cal State Long Beach Gets Nearly $1 Million CPEC Grant to Work with Local Algebra Teachers, Increase Students’ Achievement
The California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC) has awarded Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) a four-year, $996,284 grant for a project that will have university professors working with algebra teachers from five Long Beach high schools in an effort to increase mathematics achievement among students, particularly those from underperforming groups.
In our week-long coverage of Long Beach Summer Camps, we talked about performing arts camps, sports camps, marine camps and YMCA camps. There are still a few day camps that we haven’t covered. This final list of day camps has some of the most unique offerings including a camp in the clouds or a week of hands-on history at the Rancho Los Alamitos.
High school seniors are encouraged to apply for Edison International’s annual Edison Scholars program, which has a March 1 deadline to submit applications. Each selected student will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship, renewable for up to four years, $10,000 total.
Last week Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of Naomi Rainey, 59, of Long Beach, to the Advisory Commission on Special Education.
Rainey is a member of the Long Beach City College Foundation Board of Governors and serves on the Foundation Grant and Annual Fundraiser committees.
The Long Beach Health Department has announced that it has a sufficient supply of H1N1 flu vaccine for at-risk individuals for the community flu clinic being held at Millikan High School on Saturday, November 21 from 9 a.m.
