Long Beach Operation Jump Start
Operation Jump Start (OJS) works with students who attend school in the Long Beach Unified School District and are the first in their families to attend college. A volunteer mentor commits to a five-year relationship with a student and provides support to the student, both academically and in life. In addition to one-on-one mentoring, Operation Jump Start helps maximize the potential of these promising students by providing enrichment programs, and free supportive services, such as counseling, scholarship opportunities and academic tutoring.
For the fifth year in a row, the Operation Jump Start graduating class will include a Posse Scholar. But that’s only the beginning of the legacy. This year’s Posse Scholar is Panny Seng – the third in her family to graduate from Operation Jump Start, and the third in her family selected for this prestigious award.
Twenty-one years ago, Operation Jump Start was nothing more than a dream to help local Long Beach youth graduate high school and get into college. Since then, the mentoring and college access organization has grown and has helped hundreds of high-risk students overcome the challenges of poverty, language barriers, cultural gaps, and limited resources.
This January will mark the 14th annual National Mentoring Month, and Operation Jump Start is participating in this campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring opportunities to connect more of our community’s young people with caring adults.
Operation Jump Start, a charity benefiting Long Beach youth striving towards a college education, is starting to spread holiday cheer through the pre-sale of trees, wreaths and garland now through December 8th. All proceeds will fund OJS’ unique community-based mentoring programs, serving over 120 students each year.
EverythingLongBeach.com recently spoke with Erik Miller, Program Manager of Operation Jump Start, via email. They talked about the inspirations and challenges of running a nonprofit organization in Long Beach.
How long has Operation Jump Start been around?
Operation Jump Start (OJS) invites Long Beach to place their bets on the success of local students at the first Diamonds & Hearts Casino Night & Auction on Friday, September 28 at the Long Beach Marketplace Lake.
“Operation Jump Start helps dozens of students in Long Beach become the first in their families to graduate high school and gain a college education, yet there are still so many more bright kids who need our support,” said Board President Albert Israel.
