The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners last week gave preliminary approval to two incentives that officials expect will bring additional cargo to the Port while also encouraging the use of air pollution-reducing shore power and on-dock rail.

The Port of Long Beach has cut diesel particulates by 81 percent since 2005, according to an analysis released today. The results for 2012 mark six straight years of improving air quality in the harbor area thanks to the Port’s focused efforts to reduce air pollution caused by goods movement.

CMA CGM is making its first West Coast investment in the Port of Long Beach.
A CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping line, has purchased a stake in the Port of Long Beach’s Pier J, a move that will bring an additional 2.6 million container units to the Port and increase Port revenues by about $70 million over the next five years.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced a $1.34 million grant for a Port of Long Beach project to deploy cleaner cargo-handling equipment at its container terminals.
The funds will help two terminals, Piers A and J, to retrofit 11 rubber-tired gantry cranes with diesel particulate filters or exhaust treatment technologies.
