Long Beach spelling bee
The 13th-annual National Elementary School Spelling Bee is at 2 p.m., and the 9th-annual National Adult Spelling Bee is at 4:30 p.m. this Sun., Mar. 9 in the concert hall at Bay Shore Church, 5100 E. The Toledo, Long Beach, 90803.
Last March, Jem Burch, 9, a third-grader from Golden Valley Charter School in Van Nuys won Justin Rudd’s 11th –annual “$1,000 National Elementary School Spelling Bee.” He was lucky number “13” and beat out 67 other spellers in grades 3, 4 and 5 at the Bee held in Belmont Shore in Long Beach.

You may ask, what’s in a word? “Plenty, especially when it’s the rigors of an elementary grade level spelling bee and one of the participants has the opportunity to take home a grand prize of $1,000 cash,” said the $1,000 National Elementary School Spelling Bee’s organizer Justin Rudd.
Long Beach Playhouse announces its 2011 Summer Theatre Conservatory. The Theatre Conservatory is a two-week performing arts education program with two sessions to choose from. First session will be from July 11 – July 23 and the second session from July 25 – August 6.
Adults and older teens are sought for the 6th-annual NATIONAL ADULT SPELLING BEE that will take place on Sun., April 17, 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Bay Shore Church, 5100 E. The Toledo, Long Beach, Calif., 90803. The Bee is expected to last two hours.
Casting is complete for the West Coast premiere of Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein, directed by caryn desai [sic] at International City Theatre.
Cheryl David will star as Gertrude Stein with Shannon Warne playing “young Gertrude” and Melissa Lyons Caldretti as Stein’s lifelong companion, Alice B.
