Long Beach native Jessica Hardy, who earned three medals at the 2013 FINA World Championships last summer, has been named Athlete of the Year by the Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America Foundation for the third time.
The organization announced the winners of its fifth annual Aquatic Capital Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations that made the biggest impact to the Long Beach aquatics community during the previous year.
Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, City Councilmember Gary DeLong, and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine invite the public to attend a grand opening celebration for the Belmont Plaza Temporary Pool on Thursday, December 19, at 4 pm.

The indoor pool at the Belmont Plaza will remain closed for up to four months while necessary repairs are made to issues that have recently been discovered. Swim lessons and water exercise classes typically scheduled at the indoor pool have been cancelled, but visitors to the outdoor pool, which is heated to a comfortable 82 degrees, are still encouraged to engage in lap swimming.

Belmont Plaza Pool, 4000 East Olympic Plaza, re-opened to the public today, November 14, at 5:30 am after being closed for several weeks for maintenance and repairs.
“The Belmont Plaza Pool is going to reopen with a splash, and I invite the community to attend our Open House on Monday and take advantage of the improvements,” said 3rd District Councilmember Gary DeLong.
The Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America Foundation will host its third annual Aquatic Athlete of the Year ceremony on November 10, 2011, with an awards dinner and special reception with Long Beach Olympians at Keesal, Young & Logan.

Two fast-paced events — the 3rd annual Beach Water Polo Cup and a three-mile stand up paddle race — will be churning up the waters of Alamitos Bay Sat. and Sun., Aug. 28 and 29.
Playing on four separate courses, an anticipated 60 teams will compete for honors in a variety of Beach Water Polo Cup team classes, including mens/womens open and masters and boys/girls 19-under, all 3-player teams plus goalie.
The weather is getting warmer, the end of the school year is almost here, and thoughts are turning to a summer of fun in the water.

The 14-and-under water polo team for Long Beach Shore Aquatics finished a winning water polo season this holiday and celebrated by giving back to the community with volunteer work and a toy drive.
The team has been together for about five years, starting with the legendary Wilson High School Coach Klaus Barth, who passed away from cancer in 2006.
