Part one: The Language of Hatha Yoga. Sanskrit is the classic language of India and the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It is also considered one of the 22 official languages of India. The name Sanskrit means “refined” “consecrated” and “sanctified”. The pre-classical form is the language of the Vedic text, the earliest writings of yoga philosophy. It is also considered one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family.

Most Hatha yoga classes teach the postures using their Sanskrit name along with their English name. Mantras and chants are also spoken in their Sanskrit words. John will provide a history of Sanskrit and its links to Hatha yoga. We will take a look at the basic alphabet and the roots of many of the common yoga posture names. There will be a ‘hands-on’ time for the exploration of writing the Sanskrit letters.

FreeSpirit Yoga, is hosting their annual Blood Drive on Tuesday May 10, 2011. Only 38% of Americans are eligible to donate blood and of those only 8% do. That amounts to only about 3 out of every 100. Donating blood is a simple thing to do, but can make a big difference in the lives of others.

The Blood Mobile will be set up in the back parking lot. To make an appointment call 562-989-9959 or log onto the Red Cross website and enter code YOGA. You will not only receive 2 tickets to the Laugh Factory from Red Cross but also be entered into a drawing to win a monthly unlimited yoga series valued at $100.

This special event features healing harpist Peter Sterling’s original angelic compositions at The Infinite Yoga on 517 Pine Ave in Long Beach on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 6pm.

Attendees may sit and meditate during the concert, or practice a special Kundalini yoga session with instructors from The Infinite. A free LGBTQ and Allies mixer will follow the concert at 7pm.

Tickets at the door are $11, and advance tickets are available for $10 online. Early RSVP and arrival are suggested, as space is limited.

Their film project is aptly named Long Beach Voices.

The organization will provide parking, reusable garbage bags (made from recycled water bottles!), a trash dumpster, community service certificates for those that need it,  hand sanitizer and baby wipes for when the job is done.

Volunteers are asked to bring a light jacket, sunscreen, work gloves, rash grabbers and reusable water bottles — so as not to create more trash.

Save Our Beach has set-up a Saturday summer cleanup schedule that will travel from beach to beach.

Vayden Roi Galleries, headed by Evan Kelly & Liza Mitchell, partnered with the DLBA to bring enrichment to the Pine Avenue corridor by activating vacant commercial spaces.  The first location was an abandoned hookah lounge at 517 N Pine Avenue.  After weeks of cleaning and painting, the location was reopened as Exhibit [A], a temporary gallery and event venue. Since January of 2010 Exhibit [A] has hosted a variety of arts & entertainment events that bring together the residents and arts community.  At one of these events, celebrating a Haitian Relief fundraiser, the future tenants visited the site and realized it was the perfect location.  The lease was signed shortly thereafter.

The street—closed to car traffic—had no shortage of wheels on Sunday. Festival attendees traveled the one-block festival on skates, bikes, skateboards, hybrid-electric bicycles, rickshaw, wagon and even a few by foot. The free, family-friendly afternoon was part of the Long Beach Bike Festival, which also took place over the weekend.

Murshida Kadre is a yoga practitioner of 26 years, including the Indian Hatha and Kundalini Yoga, Korean Tao Yoga, Tibetan Yantra and Bon Yoga, and the Middle Eastern Sufi tradition.

Long Beach’s own Held2Gether will provide the improv troupe for “Tea Room Comedy Night” taking audience suggestions and participation. Stop in at Elise’s Tea Room to enjoy some laughs or you can show us what you’ve got.

While you’re at it, come take the stage at the Back Room Theatre @ Expo where the Long Beach Shakespeare Company will give you the stage for one-minute monologues in anticipation of their opening weekend of The Exonerated.

The Sultans Car Club will flex their car muscles at Melinda McCoy’s Flowers with 10 custom cars ranging from a 1940 Chevy to 1962 Chrysler. Automobile Art and man’s love for his vehicle.

When the businesses start to close, after hours begins at Nino’s Italian Restaurant for community eats, drinks and merriment accompanied by The Sit-Ins creating the fun vibe.

For years, she has invited Long Beach to stop by and “give of themselves” with a visit from the Red Cross Blood Mobile. The next blood drive will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The 2009 Land Meets Sea Sports Camp, a Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival event, is presented by Casa Colina in Pomona, a non-profit, community-governed organization dedicated to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. The camp is part of Casa Colina’s Outdoor Adventures Program.

Land Meets Sea Sports Camp activities will take place at Marine Stadium, U.S. Sailing Center, Mother’s Beach and the Belmont Pool. Campers will enjoy a wide variety of activities, including water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, hot air ballooning, harbor cruises, martial arts, basketball, hockey, softball, tennis, yoga and scuba diving, among others. Water skiing, jet skiing and kayaking will begin at 8 a.m., with all other activities starting at 9 a.m.

One of the most unique aspects of Land Meets Sea Sports Camp is the variety of people who attend.  The camp has participants ranging from young children to adults, as well as a wide spectrum of abilities.  Beginners as well as those with experience are made to feel welcome and capable as they try challenging sports and recreational activities. The camp has traditionally drawn participants from the West Coast and Southwestern United States, and this year many participants are coming from across the country.

The cost per camper is $300, and includes all events, lunches, goodie bag and T-shirt.

In addition, there is a special one-day Kid’s Kamp on Wed., Aug. 5, open to youth ages 4-18, that includes crafts, sand castle building and other activities. The $100 cost includes lunch, snacks and T-shirt.
