Junior golfers play for just $1 at L.A. County courses.

In a motion by Supervisor Don Knabe, July 2011 has been declared Junior Golfers Appreciation Month throughout Los Angeles County, and to salute the County’s young golfers, green fees have been reduced to $1.

During the month of July, at all 17 County golf courses, junior golfers (18 and under) can play golf for $1, after 12:00 p.m., when accompanied with a regular adult fee, senior fee, twilight fee or super-twilight fee.  In addition, each golf course will hold a free “Special Skills Day” including activities such as free lessons, clinics, skills challenge contests, and other such events that will improve and promote junior golf participation.

The theme for the event is “Bully Free Zone” and will include keynote speaker Annie Fox, who will speak about bullying issues. Skatedogs will sponsor a mobile skatepark and skateboarding jam session. Belmont Junior Aquatics Camp

Ages 5-8 (kindergarten experience). Join us on the beach side, covered patio area at Belmont Plaza Pool for summer fun. Campers enjoy games, crafts, beach play, songs, Red Cross swimming lessons, field trips, canoeing & sailing once a week at Leeway Sailing Center. 11 one-week sessions, M-F, June 21-September 3, 9am-4pm. Join Councilman Andrews and 6th District youth as they compete in this annual track meet. Last years event attracted over 200 youth, ages ranging from 6 to 13 years old. The youth will compete in four divisional meets.

“It is important to engage our youth in events that encourage them to test their strength in a positive way. Sports have always been a constructive outlet for me and I hope to carry on that tradition for our youth”, said Councilman Andrews.

Long Beach Pony leads youth baseball at Whaley Park and prepares players to compete and succeed at the next level. The league has six teams.

Long Beach Youth Soccer Organization (LBYSO) offers recreation, intermediate and advanced levels of soccer. The advance-level program (Club) is looking for new players for the 2010 spring season, boys and girls Under 8-13 teams.

The 14-and-under water polo team for Long Beach Shore Aquatics finished a winning water polo season this holiday and celebrated by giving back to the community with volunteer work and a toy drive.

The team has been together for about five years, starting with the legendary Wilson High School Coach Klaus Barth, who passed away from cancer in 2006. Coaches John Foster and Chi Kredell built on the legacy and continued the winning tradition.

The 2009 Land Meets Sea Sports Camp, a Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival event, is presented by Casa Colina in Pomona, a non-profit, community-governed organization dedicated to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. The camp is part of Casa Colina’s Outdoor Adventures Program.

Land Meets Sea Sports Camp activities will take place at Marine Stadium, U.S. Sailing Center, Mother’s Beach and the Belmont Pool. Campers will enjoy a wide variety of activities, including water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, hot air ballooning, harbor cruises, martial arts, basketball, hockey, softball, tennis, yoga and scuba diving, among others. Water skiing, jet skiing and kayaking will begin at 8 a.m., with all other activities starting at 9 a.m.

One of the most unique aspects of Land Meets Sea Sports Camp is the variety of people who attend.  The camp has participants ranging from young children to adults, as well as a wide spectrum of abilities.  Beginners as well as those with experience are made to feel welcome and capable as they try challenging sports and recreational activities. The camp has traditionally drawn participants from the West Coast and Southwestern United States, and this year many participants are coming from across the country.

The cost per camper is $300, and includes all events, lunches, goodie bag and T-shirt.

In addition, there is a special one-day Kid’s Kamp on Wed., Aug. 5, open to youth ages 4-18, that includes crafts, sand castle building and other activities. The $100 cost includes lunch, snacks and T-shirt.

Day Camp is offered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, with play on Darrick Martin Court in the St. Anthony High School Gymnasium located at 6th and Alamitos. Martin was an NBA basketball player for 13 years, most recently with the Toronto Raptors. He is a graduate of St. Anthony High School’s Class of 1988.
