Long Beach City College (LBCC) culminates its yearlong celebration of its 85th Anniversary with a festive Gala, on Thursday, May 30 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. This once-in-a-lifetime event, chaired by the LBCC Foundation, will begin with an outdoor reception, starring the “world’s greatest garage surf band” The Elm Street Band who will rock & jam in front of the Hall of Champions Gymnasium at Long Beach City College (LBCC). Guests will then proceed into the Hall of Champions at 7:00pm to enjoy dinner by Choura Events , background music by the LBCC Jazz Ensemble and the Gala Program.
The highlight of the 85th Anniversary Gala will be recognizing 24 “Vikings of the Decade” representing each decade between the 1930s and now. These outstanding alumni were selected out of close to 70 nominees for their extraordinary Viking spirit, career accomplishments, community service and dedication to LBCC. The College will also acknowledge close to 40 faculty and staff members who have made a real difference in the lives of students over the past 85 years, including Former Mayor of Long Beach Beverly O’Neill, LBCC Superintendent-President, Emerita and John Fylpaa, LBCC Dean of Athletics and Student Affairs, Emeritus.
Viking alumni paid tribute to their favorite LBCC faculty and staff members for a donation of $85 to the Long Beach College Promise Scholarships, symbolic of the College’s 85th Anniversary. All honorees will be recognized in the 85th Anniversary commemorative program and at the Gala.
“The 85th Anniversary Gala will display the evolution of our College while remaining true to its founding mission from 85 years ago,” said LBCC Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley. “It’ll be a joy to see LBCC history play out on stage as Vikings of the Decades from the 1930s to the 2000s are recognized for their exemplary leadership and commitment to the community.”
Alumni attending the Gala will have the opportunity to give back to their alma mater through the live auction titled “Invest in a Viking” that will contribute to scholarships for students. Bids will be in the amounts of $2,500 to help a student attend LBCC for two years, $1,500 to attend one year, $600 to attend one semester, $150 for a class, and $100 for the purchase of a book.
Tickets are still on sale at www.lbcc.edu/85 for $100, which includes the outdoor concert, dinner and an 85th birthday cake wheeled in by Choura Events, music by the LBCC Jazz Ensemble, memorabilia, and chocolates from the LBCC Culinary Department and Chef Pierre Jues. There will also be an “Opportunity Drawing” for a chance to win a one week stay in Tuscany, Italy, a one week stay in Kauai, Hawaii, or a floral diamond pendant.
Bank of the West, Cordoba Corporation, Port of Long Beach, and RBC Capital Markets are the “Major Sponsors” of the 85th Anniversary Gala on May 30. Anthem Blue Cross is a “Dinner Sponsor.”
