On Tuesday, September 06, 2011, the Long Beach Fire Department arrived at California Recreation Center of Long Beach with a special donation of school supplies for a group of children challenged by economic hardships. Through efforts coordinated by Spark of Love Firefighter Will Nash, 14 backpacks with school supplies were put together and passed out to kids getting ready to start school the next day. The essential supplies included pens, papers, notebooks, journals, rulers, and other items to help these children succeed in school.

The highlight of the event was when Engine 1 pulled up outside the recreation center at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Firefighters were able to stop by and say hello to the grateful students and wish them well as prepared to start off their school year.
