When most kids are enjoying the holidays at school and at home, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and firefighters from the Long Beach Fire Department Kid’s Program recognized that children in the hospital need to celebrate Christmas just like their friends and family.
The Long Beach Fire Department Kid’s Program’s (LBFD Kid’s) mission is to enhance the lives and well being of the children at Miller Children’s, by bringing smiles and laughter. Firefighters took time out of their busy schedules to uphold their yearly tradition of visiting patients and bringing Santa to help spread Christmas cheer. The firefighters pulled giant red wagons filled with gifts to every patient’s room in the hospital.
This visit and many others like it are coordinated with the Child Life Department at Miller Children’s. Child Life helps make the hospital experience more positive for children of all ages. Child Life specialists plan individualized and group programs that help children adjust to their hospital stay and promote the continuity of normal, daily childhood activities.
“All of the children at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach enjoy when the firemen visit, especially when they bring Santa with them,” says Rita Goshert, manager, Child Life. “Our patients and families all thank the heroes of the Long Beach Fire Department for their time and generosity.”
