Local Girl Scout Organizes Clothing Drive to Share the Love
2015-02-17 · By Editor
Girl Scout, Elisabeth Figueroa-Santana, and the Hughes Middle School Green Team Eco-club will team up with Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (Goodwill SOLAC) to host a Used-Clothing Drive at Hughes Middle School, 3846 California Avenue from 10am to 1pm.
February is the season to “Share the Love” by donating your old clothing, and household fabrics to Goodwill SOLAC at this community event. Drop off items on the playground on California Avenue between Bixby and Roosevelt. Items accepted include: Clothing, Accessories (pocketbooks, backpacks, hats, gloves, ties, scarves, belts, etc.), shoes, and Household Fabrics (bedding, curtains, towels, bath mats, etc.).
Donated items will go to Goodwill SOLAC for resale to support education, skills training and job placement services for individuals with barriers to employment and other disabilities. Your donation helps create new local jobs. Last year, Goodwill provided services for more than 6,400 people, trained 1,888 and placed 230 people in competitive employment. Donors can receive a donation receipt for their taxes.
Donating old clothing has positive environmental benefits. Every year over 11 million TONS of textiles – almost 85% of all textiles — end up in the landfills rather than in donation programs. Textile waste is particularly serious as textile manufacturing is very resource intense. For example, it takes approximately 700 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to manufacture just one cotton t-shirt. And while cotton crops cover just 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land, they are treated with 25% of world’s insecticides. The moral of the story is “don’t trash that old T – donate it — and share the love!”
Girl Scout Silver Award candidate Elisabeth Figueroa-Santana, organized the event to support her project to build a “Low Impact Design” demonstration garden that includes an above-ground cistern, a rain garden, and specialized irrigation systems on the Hughes Middle School Campus. Goodwill will provide the scout with an honorarium for each pound of material donated. Donations will also be accepted for the Silver Award project at the event. Checks can be written to: Troop 1233.
Please join us on Saturday, February 21st to “Share the Love” with your used clothing and toys. Why not start looking through your closets for stuff to donate today?!
