Happy HeARTists is a Long Beach based charity group started by Heather Crow Nelson. The group donates art journal and scrapbook kits to local hospitals for patients and their families. The hope is that these kits can help the families focus on the blessings of today, instead of the uncertainty of tomorrow.

Happy HeARTists was created in February 2012 by Mrs. Nelson with the help of her husband, Ryan Nelson, and her fellow members of TheIndiExhibit.org Recently diagnosed with a genetic disorder, Mrs. Nelson turned to art journaling and scrapbooking as a form of release and a way to focus on all the blessings life brings you. She saw how art journaling could help other patients and their families to heal and move forward as well. Working on these mini pieces of art would give these people a chance to live in the moment and focus on the present, as opposed to what may or may not happen tomorrow. With the encouragement from her friends and family, Mrs. Nelson moved forward with plans for a group that would donate art journal and scrapbook kits to local hospitals and in turn the patients and their families.

In just a few short weeks, this group of 10 dedicated volunteers has grown to include over 150 fans and followers. Five different organizations are interested in receiving kits, including the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House and Miller Children’s Hospital. Mrs. Nelson was featured in an interview appearing on http://www.shoes.tv. The organization has also been approved as a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.

There are numerous ways to assist Happy HeARTists, including monetary donations via Paypal, and donations of mini scrapbook albums (no larger than 8×8), journals, notebooks, stickers & embellishments, pens, glue, cardstock and printed paper.
