Long Beach Be The Match Walk+Run Will Raise Money to Add Marrow Donors

On Saturday, November 14, Marina Green will bring together marrow donors and transplant patients to demonstrate that the cure for blood cancer really is in the hands of ordinary people.

By lacing up their sneakers, participants in the Long Beach Be The Match Walk+Run® will raise money to add more potential marrow donors to the Be The Match Registry® and fund ongoing research so a marrow transplant can help even more patients with blood diseases live a long, healthy life.

Be The Match recruits and matches volunteer marrow donors with patients who need transplants to help cure their blood cancers.

In the few minutes it takes someone to swab their cheek and join the registry of volunteer potential marrow donors, another patient will learn he or she has leukemia, lymphoma or a different life-threatening blood disease. In the U.S., more than 14,000 patients are diagnosed each year.

For about 70 percent of those patients, no marrow match exists within their own families. They depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a matching donor.

The need for donors is especially urgent among ethnic minorities, who have a harder time finding transplant matches because of their genetic diversity. Among all types of donors, those between the ages of 18 and 44 provide the greatest chance for transplant success.

Because the event includes a 5K, 1K and even a Tot Trot, people of all ages and abilities are expected to participate in the Be The Match Walk+Run event. It’s part of a nationwide, 17-city series.

For some participants, the Be The Match Walk+Run will hold special meaning. It will be an opportunity to publicly celebrate a second chance at life for themselves or for a loved one – made possible because a donor took the time to join the Be The Match Registry.

Those who wish to register, contribute, volunteer or support a runner or walker can visit BeTheMatchWalkRun.org.

About Be The Match
For people with life-threatening blood cancers – like leukemia and lymphoma – or other diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can be someone’s cure as a member of the Be The Match Registry, financial contributor or volunteer. Be The Match provides patients and their families one-on-one support, education, and guidance before, during and after transplant. Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), a nonprofit organization that matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals and conducts research so more lives can be saved. To learn more about the cure, visit BeTheMatch.org or call 1 (800) MARROW-2.
