The Long Beach community has been extremely responsive to supporting Long Beach BLAST’s [Better Learning for All Students Today] sixth annual breakfast event. For the first time ever, the event is sold out, with 260 guests expected to attend. Funds raised at the breakfast will be used to support the organization’s mission to improve success for at-risk students through collaboration and innovative approaches to mentoring and learning.

This one-hour event will be held at the Long Beach Yacht Club on May 29, 2013, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Long Beach Chief of Police, Jim McDonnell, will provide a report on the “State of Youth in Long Beach.”

Hired in December 2012, Jenifer Finley, BLAST’s Executive Director, stated that she is excited that the event will have record attendance. Ms. Finley expressed her appreciation to supporters of the breakfast and stated, “The Long Beach community has a generous and caring spirit about the well-being of its youth, especially those who are the most vulnerable.”

Proceeds of the breakfast will allow the organization to impact the lives of approximately1,250 disadvantaged youth through its three programs: the Academic Mentoring Program, Bridge to College, and the Northpointe After School Education and Enrichment Program. Committed to delivering program excellence, BLAST trains and places approximately 750 local, college student volunteers who are extremely committed to fulfilling their roles as academic mentors and role models.

Based on BLAST’s own evaluation data and the findings of independent researchers, the disadvantaged children and youth served by BLAST have a greater possibility for promising futures than their peers who did not receive services.
