Long Beach Camerata Singers Announce 2016-17 Concert Season

The Long Beach Camerata Singers, a 90-voice professional choir, proudly announces its 10-concert season for 2016-17 beginning October 2, 2016 and culminating on June 3, 2017. Among the 10 performances – 4 of which are free of charge – is a new holiday concert for families. Also newsworthy is the choir’s new performance venue: most concerts will take place in the Beverly O’Neill/Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center (300 E. Ocean Blvd.) From baroque to blues to Broadway, the group will delight audiences with diverse performances directed by Dr. Rob Istad, its current Artistic Director, who being celebrated in this, his final year with the group.

The season will kick off October 2 with “The Music of Downton Abbey,” a compilation of British choral music. Concert-goers will travel back in time to experience the music that might have served as the real-life soundtrack of the Earl of Grantham. The performance will include witty banter from the choir’s very own “Lady Violet!”

Then on December 4, Camerata will present the epitome of holiday music, George Frideric Handel’s magnificent Messiah. This critically acclaimed annual concert will feature professional soloists, baroque instrumentation, and thrilling choruses, guaranteed to get the audience in the holiday spirit!

The choir is bringing the community an extra gift this year with the addition of “A Camerata Christmas” on December 17. With resounding brass instruments, angelic children’s voices, and even a visit from Santa, this holiday extravaganza will delight the whole family.

The new year will put baroque music in the spotlight with the annual Long Beach Bach Festival featuring Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 performed by the choir on April 2. Audiences can get a different perspective on the music of J.S. Bach on April 9 by relaxing with a glass of wine at the Sky Room for Jazz & Bach featuring local jazz favorite, Anne Walsh. As in previous years, the Long Beach Bach Festival also includes 4 free performances in order to ensure that everyone can experience the music of this musical icon: Long Beach Opera Goes Baroque, Long Beach Symphony Sounds and Spaces at the Bach Festival, Musica Angelica at the Bach Festival, and Camerata’s signature Kinder Konzert, an interactive performance for ages 3 and up. Free performances will be held at the Cal Heights United Methodist Church (3759 Orange Avenue).

Camerata will finish the season with a bold Broadway concert and fundraising event offering wine, hors d’oeuvres, a fantastic silent auction, and performances of Broadway’s greatest hits. The June 3 event is one of the hottest tickets in town!
