Long Beach Farm Dinner: An Urban Garden Under the Stars
2010-09-17 · By Editor
Local, sustainable and under the stars! The Long Beach Farm Dinner on October 23 is a rare chance to dine al fresco in an urban garden, and a smart way for garden organizers to raise money for The Growing Experience in Carmelitos.
Local chefs will prepare a five-course meal for the Long Beach Farm Dinner that showcases seasonal flavors and ingredients harvested fresh from the urban farm. Participating chefs include: Paul Buchanan of Primal Alchemy, Michael Poompan of Sip at the Renaissance Hotel Long Beach, Andrew Gruel and David Anderson of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Seafood for the Future and pastry Chef Justina Fentin of Shortnin’ Bread.
The Growing Experience is a seven-acre farm located in North Long Beach within the Carmelitos Housing Development. It’s a working and teaching farm operated by the Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles, that includes a paid job-training program that gives participates the valuable skills to join the “growing” green industry.
The urban farm grows vegetables and fruits year-round using sustainable methods, with no chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Food from The Growing Experience is made available to the community through BeachGreens, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program — which also happens to be one of the few truly local CSAs in Long Beach. The fresh produce is also available through a local produce delivery service, and at several Long Beach restaurants.
The Long Beach Farm Dinner and reception takes over the garden from 5:30 p.m to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 23. Tickets for the famiy-style dinner are $65 for individuals or make it a party and reserve a table of eight for $475.
Reservations are due by October 9. To RSVP by mail send a check to: “Primal Alchemy” Attn: Farm Dinner, 3819 E. 7th Street, Long Beach CA 90804. Be sure to include the names of all of the guests that will be attending and the email and contact information for one of you. Contact email@example.com with any questions.
The Growing Experience is located at 750 E. Via Carmelitos in Long Beach, CA 90805. For more information the urban farm, contact Jimmy Ng by calling (562) 984-2917 or send an email to Jimmy.Ng@lacdc.org.
