COMMON: Long Beach Arts Collective invites you to an exhibition opening displaying the work of Long Beach based photojournalist Drew Kelley on Saturday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at ArtExchange Long Beach. The show titled, “Long Beach Life: Documentary Photography” is the first solo photography exhibit for Kelley and explores the everyday life and beauty of the residents of the city. The photography show is being held at 350 East 3rd Street in Long Beach and will take place during the Second Saturday event. The show continues through March 30.
Before deciding to major in photojournalism, Drew shot black and white photographs in downtown Los Angeles. He loved the freedom of being on the street and making beautiful images of complete strangers. After four years of formal photography training, Kelley moved to Long Beach to start an internship.
“It was around this time, the end of 2007, that I wasn’t feeling the same about photography as I did when I started,” said Kelley. “Basically, I was really tired of what photography had become in my life. It felt really structured and all about the money.”
Between assignments at a newspaper, Drew spent his free time wandering the streets of Long Beach. He enjoyed the challenge of gaining access to strangers and capturing people in a timeless way.
“I’ve always strived to create images that someday would be worthy of the Historical Society,” said Kelley. These images are a window into the lives of the people of Long Beach from 2007 to 2013, but to me, these images represent me falling back in love with photography.”
Kelley’s work has been featured in publications such as Lodown Magazine, W Magazine, Orange County Register, Blackbookmag.com, Pitchfork.com, OC Weekly and LA Weekly.
All images for “Long Beach Life: Documentary Photography” were printed on hot pressed archival cotton paper.
