The 5th annual Southern California-wide 12-week team weight-loss contest called “Long Beach Losers” begins Sat., Aug. 27 with official weigh-ins of 600-800 expected participants from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Belmont Shore.
The 2011 lists aren’t out yet, but Long Beach was named the #17 “fattest city in the U.S.” in 2010, according to Men’s Fitness magazine. In 2009, Long Beach was also in the top-25 of that list. In response, Long Beach advocate Justin Rudd and his nonprofit Community Action Team are spearheading the 5th annual community-wide team weight loss challenge that will last for 12 weeks. The contest is called, “Long Beach Losers.”
Teams of five will weigh-in with volunteers on each of the 12 Saturdays following the initial weigh-in date. Weigh-ins will be in front of the Belmont Athletic Club, 4918 E. 2nd St. in Belmont Shore, across from Jamba Juice. The contest keeps track of each individual and each team’s overall weight loss percentages from week to week.
Although organizers won’t know exactly how many teams and individuals are in the competition until the initial weigh-in, more than 800 participants were in the contest last year. Last year’s jackpot reached more than $49,000.
Each 5-person team will choose their own team name (i.e. Dough Boys, Flab Five, Jelly Bellies). At each of the weekly Saturday weigh-ins, Losers will put $5 in the “jackpot” and may be fined $2 for each pound (or fraction thereof) that they might gained or if their weight stays the same from week to week. Some pre-registered team names last year included: ” Lost in Weight,” “I Pity the Food,” “Baby Got Back” and “All That and No Bag of Chips.”
The 5th annual Long Beach Losers begins Sat., Aug. 27, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Belmont Athletic Club, 4918 E. 2nd St. @ Roycroft Ave., Belmont Shore, Long Beach, 90803.
600-800 weight-loss contestants registering, will be putting cash in the jackpot, and getting weighed-in on the sidewalk in front of an athletic club in Belmont Shore.
Each competitor will pay $5 into the “jackpot” at each of the 13 weigh-ins (including the initial weigh-in), and the pot will be disbursed back to the overall teams and individual losers at the end of the 85-day contest. The final weigh-in will be just days before Thanksgiving, and a celebration and awards ceremony is planned a few days after the contest ends.
